IIB celebrates World Refugee Day - Friday June 19th
Please join everyone at the International Institute of Buffalo on June 19th from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm in recognition of World Refugee Day. The celebration will include two photo exhibits from UNHCR: Surviving Darfur, a photo essay about refugees in Darfur documenting the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Sudan and Chad and The Town that Loves Refugees - an exhibit featuring refugees in Utica, New York, a city where nearly one out of six residents is a refugee, and where city officials as well as industry leaders credit refugees with reversing the town’s decline.
Our World Refugee Day celebration will also feature a photo collection inspired and created by the contributions of refugees living in Western New York, a second screening of the new International Institute documentary, as well as vendors from the Buffalo refugee community, and educational literature. Admission is $10. $3 cash bar. For more information, contact Elise Garvey at 883-1900 ext 326, or via email at tassistant1@iibuff.org.
Western New York Students Can Tour in China!
The International Institute of Buffalo has recently partnered with the U.S. State Department’s Forte International Exchange Program. This project will focus on high school student exchanges for the 2009 – 2010 school year. A major benefit for Western New York host families is a tax deduction, totaling $450.00 for the academic year. In addition, children from host families will have the opportunity to travel to China for two weeks in July 2010, free of charge. Most students will come to us from China or Korea. For more information, please contact: Julienne Mascellino, International Visitors Coordinator, 883-1900 ext. 328 or visitorhosting@iibuff.org.
