International Exchanges

The International Institute of Buffalo is one of over 90 U.S. councils affiliated with the National Council for International Visitors (NCIV). As such, we host professional delegations as part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and the Open World Program.
Program participants are leaders in their professions, selected by U.S. embassies overseas as people likely to be instrumental in shaping the future of their home countries. Delegates share best practices with their counterparts here in Western NY, teach us about their countries, learn about life in Buffalo Niagara, and establish personal and business relationships in the name of citizen diplomacy.
IVLP Program Alumni include: Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Yukio Hatoyama, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Helmut Kohl. There are currently 43 IVLP Alumni who are Heads of Government.
In addition to hosting approximately 100 delegates and interpreters each year, we offer opportunities to international students through UB's English Language Institute.
