Hiring Refugees

The International Institute of Buffalo works closely with employers and refugees to ensure that each job placement is a good fit for the employer and the new employee. All refugees resettled by the International Institute are legal immigrants, able and eager to work in the United States. Read below for more information, or call (716) 866-8766 to speak with our Job Developer, Eve Williams.

FAQs about Hiring to Refugees

What kind of work documents do refugees have?

For purposes of employment, our clients have a form I-94 and social security card to satisfy the requirements of the I-9 employment verification form. Even before they arrive in the United States, our clients are given "refugee status," which indicates that they have entered the country legally and have received a rigorous, multi-tiered security clearance and work authorization.      back to top

Do refugees speak English?

All clients are enrolled in appropriate English classes or employment training programs upon their arrival in the United States. Our clients' English language ability varies from "Hello" to having worked as interpreters for the United States military.    back to top
